L’ATELIER
La Maison du Raphia specializes in creating beautiful and utterly unique products for your home, made from the finest raffia.
We are committed to forging a mutually beneficial connection between people and resources.
With the very best flourishing raffia in the world and Madagascar being the largest producer, our workshop is proud to collaborate with local farmers and artisans to pioneer a better approach to sustainable production and community development. Our commitment to responsible sourcing and fair trade practices ensures that our raffia products not only meet the highest standards of quality, but also support the livelihoods of those who cultivate and craft them.
OUR PROJECT
La Maison du Raphia has a dual focus of empowering disadvantaged Malagasy women and supporting raffia producers in their pursuit of fair wages and economic stability.
Through our training programs, we provide women with the opportunity to learn a valuable skill and achieve greater independence. By honing their craft, they can earn a sustainable income and help their families meet their basic needs.
In addition, we work directly with local raffia producers, reducing intermediaries and building strong commercial relationships based on dialogue, transparency, and respect. By forging these direct partnerships, we ensure that producers receive fair compensation for their products and have greater financial stability. Through annual contracts with fixed prices, we provide them with economic security and the confidence to plan for the future.
By providing this support to both farmers and artisans, our enterprise creates a sustainable and equitable ecosystem that enables all parties to earn a fair and comfortable living wage.
POSITIVE IMPACTS
REFORESTATION
Farmers in our program have planted over 50,000 native species trees since 2010, contributing directly to the reforestation of the endangered Madagascar rainforest.
CONSERVATION
By providing subsistence farmers with sustainable supplemental income, we encourage inter-cropping practices using native plant species, thus contributing to the protection and conservation of endemic flora and fauna.
EDUCATION
We support farmers and artisans to earn enough to send their children to school.
FAIR LABOR
We provide regular employment opportunities to a team that would otherwise struggle to access paid jobs. Our artisans benefit from fair working conditions, respectful treatment, and dignified pay, with wages that exceed Madagascar’s average by 30%. Additionally, we ensure that our supply chain is free of modern slavery.
RAW MATERIAL
We use raffia that is native to Madagascar and carefully grown and harvested using sustainable methods. By doing so, we help support local communities and ensure our production processes are socially responsible. Plus, as a natural and renewable material, our raffia has a low environmental impact ; making it an ideal choice for our products.
